Excellent
- Windwalker Monks are known for their ability to target swap with ease and cleave enemies down with AoE abilities like Fists of Fury, empowered Blackout Kicks, Strike of the Windlord, Whirling Dragon Punch and empowered Spinning Crane Kicks without losing any single target damage.
- Windwalker Monks have multiple powerful defensive abilities like Touch of Karma, Diffuse Magic, and Fortifying Brew allowing them to survive exceptionally large enemy hits.
- One of the strongest aspects of a Windwalker Monk is their mobility as you can effortlessly close gaps to enemies with Roll, Flying Serpent Kick, Tiger's Lust, and even swap places with their Transcendence.
- Their toolkit is especially strong when looking to control and disrupt enemies with the help of Leg Sweep, Ring of Peace and Paralysis.
- However, like any specialization, Windwalker Monks have their weaknesses. This mainly being their passive damage intake is higher than most at the expense of being able to live predictable large hits.

Deep Dive
Patch 11.0 - The War Within
Windwalker Monk
Mastery
- It is very important to never break your Mastery: Combo Strikes or Hit Combo. During downtime you can use Flying Serpent Kick or Chi Burst to keep up your Hit Combo when necessary. If the boss is immune to damage you can also use Crackling Jade Lightning to keep it up.
Touch of Karma
- To maximize your damage output you want to press Touch of Karma on every damage event possible in the fight. You can increase the absorbed amount of your Touch of Karma damage by using Fortifying Brew beforehand to increase your maximum health. You can also ask your Warrior to press Rallying Cry if it is not needed as a Raid cooldown to get even more health before using Touch of Karma.
Touch of Death
- As a Windwalker Monk it is very important for you to snipe any low health add with Touch of Death to get your 5% damage buff.
Dance of Chi-Ji and Mark of the Crane
- It is worth it to hold your Dance of Chi-Ji proc if you are able to stack Mark of the Crane depending on if adds are going to spawn within the duration of your Dance of Chi-Ji buff.
Storm, Earth, and Fire
- Your clones prioritize hitting targets that have no Mark of the Crane on them as their mimicked abilities apply it.
- You can press Storm, Earth, and Fire again to fixate your clones on a target after getting 5 Mark of the Crane stacks. It is especially good if your clones hit targets far away from the rest of the enemies that you would otherwise not be able to spread Mark of the Crane to.
- It is extremely important to fixate your clones otherwise you could miss out on potential cleave from Whirling Dragon Punch, Fists of Fury, and Spinning Crane Kick.
Understanding Mechanics

- You can help stop the casts from the Primalist Mages with Ring of Peace, Leg Sweep, and Paralysis.
- Try to snipe an add with Touch of Death to get a damage buff.
- When you reach Phase 2, put down a Transcendence on top of the boss so you can quickly get back after getting fixated by a beam during Empowered Greatstaff's Wrath.
- You can hold your Strike of the Windlord in Phase 2 for Frozen Shroud to get more Thunderfist stacks.
- Utilizing Diffuse Magic and Fortifying Brew while having high stacks of Wildfire as Empowered Greatstaff of the Broodkeeper is going off is a good way to keep yourself healthy as these overlaps can otherwise be deadly.

Phase 1
- Call for an external or use one of your defensives if you are directly affected by Static Charge.
- Place a Transcendence on the boss to quickly get back from Hurricane Wing.
- You can use Transcendence on the first and third pushback.
- Chi Torpedo and Flying Serpent Kick are great tools to get back to the boss quickly after Hurricane Wing.
Phase 2
- Place a Transcendence directly under the boss to help your team by giving them more space to not cleave each other during Tempest Wing.
- You can use Tiger's Lust on people who are affected by Fulminating Charge to help them get out.

Boss Tips
- You can tag your Raid members when they are affected by Corruption to get additional Mark of the Crane stacks.
- Make sure to use Storm, Earth, and Fire: Fixate if you have Storm, Earth, and Fire up during the Corruption mind control.
- Help your tank in the last phase out by using Leg Sweep on the adds so they do not gain stacks.
- You can hold your Strike of the Windlord for the adds to be on top of the boss to gain funnel for boss damage.

Boss Tips
- Using Touch of Karma right as the pull starts ensures you get another use at the end of Phase 1.
- You can use Crackling Jade Lightning at the end of Phase 1 to maintain your Hit Combo while Sarkareth is immune in the air.
- In the first intermission, you should have at least 2 Chi and Flying Serpent Kick ready so you can Spinning Crane Kick or Flying Serpent Kick to maintain your Hit Combo while you are unable to hit anything.
- Preferably you collect 2 of the 3 Mind Fragments and then wait at 9 stacks of Astral Flare refreshing them to 10 right before collecting your third Mind Fragment. This ensures that you have maximum uptime of the haste buff while being able to damage the boss.
- Click here for a video of how to min max your Astral Flares.
- You can use Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace to help control the adds.
- After Phase 2 concludes, remember to put your Transcendence directly in the middle of the room. This enables you to quickly use Transcendence: Transfer if you mess up and fall through a Dimensional Puncture in the ground.

Defensive Cooldown Usage
Boss Tips
- You can dispel the Mass Entanglement root with Tiger's Lust.
- You can save one of your Storm, Earth, and Fire charges that you aren't using in conjunction with Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger for any of the root sets that might be lacking damage.
- Holding your Dance of Chi-Ji proc for Mass Entanglement is beneficial for your damage.
- You want to have your Rising Sun Kick on cooldown before the Mass Entanglement cast is finished so you can use Whirling Dragon Punch.
Offensive Cooldown Usage
Boss Tips
- You can dispel Aflame on yourself with Diffuse Magic if your healers are struggling with dispelling.
Phase 1
- Place a Transcendence prepull on the spot where the boss will be pulled to so you can Transcendence: Transfer back to the boss if you get the first Firestorm.
- Always use Diffuse Magic, Touch of Karma, or Fortifying Brew after Darkflame Shades for the Wildfire and Fyr'alath's Flame combo in Phase 1.
- When the boss goes into intermission, use either Demonic Gateway or your Transcendence to negate fall damage.
Phase 2
- Leg Sweep can be used to disrupt Searing Screams when the Screaming Souls are gathered up.
- Use your defensives when you get targeted by Shadow Cage or during Blaze.
- You can use Ring of Peace to help with the Screaming Souls stacking.
Phase 3
- In Phase 3 you can place a Transcendence on the boss to quickly return after dropping a Swirling Firestorm.
- Use your Touch of Karma, Diffuse Magic, and Fortifying Brew on Blaze and Eternal Firestorm.
Stat Priority
Patch 11.0 - The War Within
Windwalker Monk
Understand your secondary stat priority and the tertiary stats needed for optimal performance during Raid boss fights as a Windwalker Monk. For more detailed information, visit the Stats and Attributes guide.
Higher Item level items are better in most scenarios. For an accurate representation of what item to equip you should use Simcraft! A static "Stat Priority" is just a starting point and can easily shift depending on your individual gear.
- All secondary stats are affected by diminishing returns. Click here to learn more!
Tertiary
- Avoidance - Great stat to reduce the damage intake of "Area of Effect" abilities.
- Leech - Provides additional healing through damage dealing. The damage of your pets does not heal you thus Leech is a great tertiary for you since most of your damage is coming from your own spells.
- Speed - Niche tertiary that can be very useful and has been proven useful in the past. Makes playing certain mechanics a lot easier.

Embellishments
Patch 11.0 - The War Within
Windwalker Monk
- 2x Blue Silken Lining
- A good choice if you have over 90% health most of the time and especially during your cooldowns.
- The optimal slots to craft on are Wrists, Boots, Waist or Cloak depending on your available gear.
or
- 2x Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch
- Use Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch instead of Blue Silken Lining if you are below 90% health for a considerable amount of time throughout the fight.
- The optimal slots to craft on are Wrists, Boots, Waist or Cloak depending on your available gear.
Honorable mention
- Elemental Lariat
- A good alternative to use if you have access to the maximum amount of gems. This is decent in multi target scenarios especially if your Blue Silken Lining uptime is not great.
Remaining Sparks
- Make sure to apply Alchemical Flavor Pocket if you have an additional crafted item equipped.
- Crafted items are 525 item level and regular items are 528 on max item level therefor it's not beneficial to equip crafted items outside of your 2x embellishments unless you don't have access to other high item level gear on that slot.

Races
Patch 11.0 - The War Within
Windwalker Monk
For min maxing a Windwalker Monk in raiding, different racial traits can provide a tremendous benefit to your characters. If this is not your top goal, picking a race that fits your style works just as well.
- Stoneform -- Dwarf
- Can dispel Magic and Bleed debuffs. Has been useful in the past on some bosses with Bleeds.
- Rocket Jump -- Goblin
- A small jump in the direction your character is facing.
- While in the Rocket Jump animation you are placed on a global cooldown until your character lands.
- Berserking -- Troll
- Strong DPS racial.
- Reduce the duration of movement impairing effects by 20%. Was only useful once in the recent history of progression raiding but worth noting.
- Blood Fury -- Orc
- Strong racial for damage because of it lines up with Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger.
- 20% reduced stun duration on you which can be useful in some situations.
- Spatial Rift -- Void Elf
- Active to spawn a shadow traveling in the direction you are facing. Activate again to teleport to it.
- Maximum range of 100 yards.
Recommendation
WARNING: Due to scaling in the prepatch it's currently difficult to determine the highest dps racial. Pin the guide to be notified when we update our recommendation for the War Within.
In general, it's safe to say that if you care about min-maxing your DPS you should go with the highest DPS racial. That being said the story is a bit different if it's about progression raiding. Some help out massively to speed up the progression of certain bosses. Notably Dwarf with their Stoneform helped out on Tindral Sageswift & Fyrakk the Blazing in the latest Race to World First by having easy access to dispelling yourself at crucial points of the fights mentioned.
