COLLEGE PARK, MD- The University of Maryland softball team will begin its 2024 season this week in the Stacy Winsberg Tournament in Los Angeles, California. The Terps will face off against four different opponents over three days of competition. The action kicks off Feb. 9 when the Terps open the season against San Diego at 1:00 p.m. ET. and will take on No. 10 UCLA later in the day at 6 p.m. ET.

2023 season success

  • Maryland had their most successful season since 2011, recording 38 wins, the most in over a decade.
  • 38 wins is the most in a season for Maryland since 2011 when the Terps' recorded 40 wins.

  • The Terps' have recorded three straight seasons of 10+ wins in the Big Ten .
  • The Terps' reached their first postseason since NCAA Regionals in 2012 and the school's fifth National Postseason Tournament appearance.
  • Maryland received a top seed in the 2023 National Invitational Softball Tournament (NISC) and finished third with wins against CSUN and San Jose State.
  • In the first game of the 2023 season, a first inning outburst helped the Terps' secure a huge victory over No. 22 Oregon, it was the program's first season-opener victory over a ranked opponent since 2008.
  • Just three games later, Maryland shocked the nation again when they came back to beat No. 3 Oklahoma State, 11-6.
  • It was Maryland's first win over a top-three opponent in over five years and its record ranked victory in program history.

Wyche & McFarland Earn Honors

  • Courtney Wyche and Jaeda McFarland return for their final year at Maryland. Wyche and McFarland both were named Second Team All-Big Ten, while McFarland also earned All-Defensive Team honors. McFarland earns herself postseason honors for the third consecutive year.
  • Courtney Wyche was a constant threat in the circle for the Terps in 2023. The graduate student wracked up 17 wins in 30 appearances over the regular season. Wyche recorded a career-high 179 strikeouts in the circle, bringing her total to 412 on her career.
  • Jaeda McFarland earns herself postseason honors for the third consecutive year. McFarland is top-three on the team in six different offensive categories, slugging percentage, runs, hits, RBIs, doubles, and batting average. She is also second on the team in stolen bases. Appearing and starting in all 52 games in center field for the Terps, McFarland finished the regular season with a perfect fielding percentage.
  • Wyche and McFarland earned NFCA Midwest Region Second team honors during postseason play.

New Faces

  • Maryland welcomes four new transfers to the Terrapin roster for the 2023-2024 season.
  • Mazie MacFarlane (Rocklin, CA / Utah State) joins the Terps after three successful seasons as an Aggie at Utah State. MacFarlane missed her senior year due to injury but as a junior she was the only Aggie to start in all 56 games and batted .294 with 52 hits in 2022
  • Graduate student Sam Bean (Rockwall, Texas / Lamar) joins Maryland after a successful season at Lamar. She earned Southland Conference All-Academic First-Team honors appearing and started in all 56 games. Bean batted .309 with 50 hits and 21 RBIs.
  • Diamond Williams graduate student (Augusta, Georgia / Coastal Carolina) comes to Maryland after a successful senior season at Coastal Carolina. As a senior she led the team in runs (44), hits (60), home runs (13), RBIs (46), and total bases (110). She played three years at Mercer.
  • Bri Godfrey (Deerfield Beach, Florida / Marshall) joins the Terrapins after playing her freshman season at Marshall. As a freshman she played in 40 games and started in 29. Made a late season surge earning All-Tournament Team in the Sun Belt Tournament. Finished with 19 hits on the year and a perfect 8-8 in stolen bases.

Mazie MacFarlane joins the Terps after transfering in from Utah State.

Moving up the Record books

  • Senior outfielder Megan Mikami is four stolen bases shy of breaking the program record for most stolen bases in a career with 67. The record is currently held by Vangie Galindo (2009-2012). Mikami has led the Big Ten in stolen bases in back-to-back years.
  • Jaeda McFarland is currently fourth all time in career batting average with .331 and currently has the school record for most career triples with 13. McFarland is also fourth in school history in stolen bases and is only 10 back from moving up into third place..
  • Graduatestudent Courtney Wyche is currently in seventh place in career strikeouts and only 67 strikeouts back from moving into fifth place. She is 7th in career wins with 41 only 16 wins behind moving into second place. Lastly, she has pitched 454 innings in her career only 125 winnings from moving into fifth place.
  • FreshmanKeira Bucher led the country in saves with 12, the most ever in program history. After her freshman year she currently holds the school record for most saves in program history.

Freshman spotlight

  • Marylandwelcomes six new freshman to the Terrapin roster for the 2024 season.
  • Thegroup is highlighted by Delaney Reefe (Frederick, Md.) and Julia Shearer (Hatfield, Pa.), who were both named Gatorade Players of the Year in their respective states .
  • Reefe led the Hawks to a 20-3 record and the Class 4A state championship this past season. Reefe complied a 20-3 mark in the circle with a 1.04 earned run average, striking out 170 batters while walking just 26 in 135 innings. A natural catcher pressed into service as a hurler, Reefe batted .557 with 11 home runs, 33 runs scored, 37 RBI, and a 1.200 slugging percentage.
  • Shearerled the Knights to a 25-0 record and a berth in the Class 6A state quarterfinals. The state's returning Gatorade Player of the Year, Shearer posted a 25-0 record in the cirlce with a 0.23 ERA entering the postseason round of eight. Ranked as the nation's No.21 recruit in the Class of 2023 by Extra Inning Softball, Shearer batted .645 with 10 home runs, 49 runs scored and 30 RBI.
