A shocking case of modern-day slavery has left a couple facing severe consequences, including the loss of their home's sale proceeds and a substantial financial penalty. In 2016, the Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce (CACT) took decisive action, seizing the couple's home after they were charged with slavery offences. The couple, consisting of a 61-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman, were found guilty in a 2021 trial for enslaving an Indian woman who had visited Australia as a tourist. The court's verdict was clear: they were guilty of possessing a slave and exercising the powers of ownership over her. The woman was sentenced to eight years in prison with the possibility of parole after four years, while the man received a six-year sentence with parole eligibility after three years. The couple's home, sold for $1.4 million in 2016, became a central point of interest. After covering mortgage and sale expenses, the couple's equity of approximately $475,000 was restrained and eventually forfeited in 2022. This amount was then granted to the victim as an ex gratia payment, totaling around $485,000. The CACT also sought pecuniary penalty orders against the couple for the financial gains they derived from their heinous actions. Stefan Jerga, the National Manager of Criminal Assets Confiscation, Fraud, and Corruption, emphasized the significance of the CACT's work in targeting forced labor and preventing offenders from profiting from their crimes. He praised the team's dedication and the successful outcome of the case. The couple eventually agreed to pay a combined pecuniary penalty of $140,000, in addition to the forfeited equity and accrued interest.
